PROGRAMME
OF ACTIVITIES
i)
Seedling
Production/Distribution
The Value
Chain procures from the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR),
improved tenera sprouted nuts which are delivered to accredited public and
private nursery operators, estates and mega seed companies for raising into
mature seedlings, for distribution to farmers under the Growth Enhancement
Support (GES) Scheme.
ii)
Oil Palm Growth Enhancement Support (GES)
Scheme
The Value Chain actively participates
in GES schemes, and participated in 2013 and 2014 GES schemes, targeting 15,353 farmers in 2013
and 30,000 farmers in 2014.
iii)
Support
for Harvesting
The
Value Chain promotes the use of motorized harvesters to enhance the harvest of fresh
fruit bunches by 30 percent.
iv)
Support
for Processing
Use
of improved processing methods is being encouraged. Processing equipment being
promoted include;
(i)
0.5mt
ffb/hr medium scale processing equipment (MSPE) to produce premium palm oil.
(ii) Automated nut cracker and separator
to ensure palm kernel recovery.
v)
Capacity
Building
The Value
Chain is actively engaging in capacity building for oil palm farmers.
vi)
Yield Improvement
As
a means of increasing yield and productivity per hectare, the value chain is
partnering with NIFOR for dissemination of Fertility Management Packages to organized
smallholders and unorganized Semi–Wild Grove (SWG) Homestead farmers.
vii)
Investment
Support
Local,
private and foreign Companies have enlisted in various oil palm investment
activities following the enabling environment created under ATA. Activities
being undertaken include production, processing and marketing. Many local
investors are planting new farms, expanding existing ones, as well as
establishing and expanding processing outfits.
viii)
Partnership
with Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil–Nigeria (RSPO–Nigeria)
The
Ministry is actively partnering with RSPO–Nigeria in the preparation of the
Principles and Criteria for RSPO–Nigeria, in order to enhance sustainable
development of the oil palm industry. Activities being undertaken include
production, processing and marketing.
ix)
Collaboration with Stakeholders
The Value Chain actively
collaborates with Stakeholders and participated in the 1st International
Palm Produce Conference (1st IPPC 2013) on “Investment in Oil Palm
and its Derivatives: A Panacea for African Economic Growth and Sustenance,”
held at the prestigious Le–Meridien Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort, Uyo, Akwa Ibom
State.
ROLES
OF STATE GOVERNMENTS
Some of the roles of
State Governments in the 24 oil palm producing States include:
a)
Participation
in raising improved tenera oil palm seedlings for distribution to farmers,
under the Federal Government’s oil palm nursery activities.
b)
Involved
in the implementation of Federal Government’s Growth Enhancement Support scheme
(GES), and contribute 25% of cost of input items e.g oil palm seedlings
distributed to farmers.
c)
Assist
farmers acquire land and create enabling environment for agricultural
activities at both the State and Local Government levels.
